Want to start working on and designing your dream space, but you don’t know where to start?

We have the simplest hack in store for you: Create your own Mood Board! A Mood Board is a visual representation of ideas for a design project. At its most basic, a mood board is a collage of images. It is a tool that helps you organise your ideas and figure out your aesthetic right from the get go. This collage of images is a Designer’s go – to tool to start off with any design project. The purpose of a mood board is to help determine the general style, mood, colours, and overall feel of a room or project space. The mood board lets you put your ideas together in one place, then take a step back to see what works well together and what doesn’t. It helps inform your design direction and avoid potentially costly mistakes down the road. The last thing you want is to put several hours into a project only to realise later it’s not going in the right direction.

So, let’s get right into it!

To design your interior, what are some elements you absolutely should have in your mood Board?

  1. Overall “feel” and vibe of the space you want to achieve. Using photos that appeal to you is a great way to figure this out. For example: Do you want a Rustic vibe? A Minimalist vibe?
  2. Furniture Pieces – Include what you already own, and pieces that have caught your eye.
  3. Artwork
  4. Colour schemes you’ll be choosing between
  5. Flooring
  6. Accessories
  7. Drapery

Now that you have the elements you must include in your Mood Board, what are the steps you can take to actually create it?

Step 1: Start scouring the internet and saving your favourites.

  • Whichever photo you come across, that appeals to you should be saved! These small inspirations come in handy, to recreate when you are finalising the design of your space. Remember, the Mood Board is a space where you can experiment, add and remove whatever you feel like, so go crazy with creativity!

Step 2: Decide which platform you can create your Board on!

  • There are several platforms you can use to create a basic Mood Board. A few popular ones are:
  1. Pinterest: There is a wide community of interior design enthusiasts on Pinterest, and it is one that shares ideas and aesthetic designs constantly. Start pinning rooms, colour schemes, furniture and accessories that you like. Try to avoid having too many preconceived ideas and just start pinning what appeals to you. Look for individual shots of furniture, with plain white backgrounds so you can see how it looks with the commotion of anything else.
  2. Canva: Canva is a fan favourite! You can choose from multiple Mood Board templates, colour schemes, aesthetics. Etc. Canva allows you to import images that you have saved and input them into the template. You can also add text, icons, etc.
  3. Physical Mood Board: The original mood board was not digital, it was physical! It can be a great activity, to scour magazines, newspapers, and even the internet! Keep a pair of scissors and glue handy, and get cutting!

Your mood board is a bit of a playground, a safe space to experiment where everything can be easily tried, tested and swapped around in a flash. Inspiration can strike whenever, so don’t be afraid to keep coming back to your mood board, and keep experimenting! Whatever means you use to create your mood board, just remember that it’s a great tool to pull your designs together in one place, and see how they fit in together. And don’t forget When you finalise your mood board, take a step back and ask yourself: Do I like what I see and Does this make me feel good? If yes, Great! If not, continue to tweak out elements you are not sure about, until you get the aesthetic you wish for! And most importantly, take your time and have fun with it! At Creative Architects, our first step is to have a detailed conversation with our clients, to find out what their desired aesthetic will be for the project. After that, we work on a mood board ourselves!
