When you were young, did you ever envision your perfect home? And design it in your head or on a piece of paper? And now, all grown up, it’s a little difficult to decide through all the Interior Design Aesthetics and Styles that have come up! Everyone has their own unique taste when it comes to decorating, furnishing, and accessorizing their own home. But how do you bring those preferences together into a cohesive décor style? We’re here to help you figure out what your personal aesthetic is, and what the different types of Interior Design Aesthetics are!

Here are some ways you can find your design style so you can create spaces that look beautiful, feel authentic, and reflect your unique point of view.

  • Take Cues from your Closet:  The first thing I recommend in learning how to choose a design style is to take design cues from your closet.  Take a look at your favorite clothing and notice what colors, fabrics and patterns you turn to again and again. For example, if you are someone who feels comfortable wearing bright colors as statement pieces, I believe you’d love a bright pop of color in your space, like a coloured sofa or an art piece!
  • Gather Design Inspiration: Gather inspiration to help you narrow down your personal decorating style. Gather ideas from film, music, travel, or nature.  Thumb through interior design magazines and coffee table books. Or simply scroll through inspiring spaces on Instagram or Pinterest and save what you love to a board or folder. See if you can spot a trend, color scheme, or overall theme in what resonates with you.
  • Find spaces that you feel most at peace in: It’s really important to design your home in a way that really lets you calm down and be yourself. Take inspiration from places that have made you feel safe and happy. These spaces could be a tiny corner in a cafe or a corridor in a Library.

Now that we’ve looked at some ways to find out how you can find your personal style, let’s look at what these Interior Design Aesthetics look like!

  • Minimalist: One of the most thoroughly modern interior design styles to consider, people often tend to confuse minimalism with a stark coldness and uncomfortable severity – which is hardly the case at all. In fact, there’s even a warmer take on minimal interior design (warm minimalism) that’s full of no-fuss, clean elegance. Think of simplicity, refinement, and functionality; with comfort at the forefront, of course. If you are someone that enjoys clean spaces, clear lines and no fuss, the Minimalist Style is for you.

  • Contemporary: Contemporary style is completely of the moment. Contemporary interior design styles trends also have more freedom, and can be used to incorporate both quirky and subtle aspects of your personality all in the same home.

  • Traditional: While Modern Styles are very prominent these days, almost everything is rooted in traditional interior design ideas. If you are someone who loves history, ornate designs and a touch of grandeur, a Traditional Design Style seems like the best fit for you!

  • The Rustic Style: You love being outdoors, taking hikes and being amongst nature? The Rustic Style takes inspiration from the outdoors and a combination of farmhouse and industrial interior design styles. It places an emphasis on natural and weathered finishes, raw wood, stone, and leather, with unexpected touches and an overall sophisticated bent.

  • Coastal: This type of design brings together elements that feature light, bright, and airy environs often dreamed up in vibrant neutrals to soak up the sun’s rays. Common coastal color palettes include shades of light blues and greens inspired by the ocean. This is also a great style for someone who loves being outdoors, but around the sea and with the wind in your hair!

  • Bohemian: One of the most timeless and endlessly popular interior design styles out there, bohemian décor represents a care and fuss-free freedom. This style boasts of vintage and antique furnishings sourced from passionate flea-market treks and travels, and eclectic style also touches on hints of everyday glamor via beaded fabrications, jewel tones, and overall relaxed mood. This is perfect for someone who loves color, brightness and eccentricity in their space!
